NASA Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program (SHARP)
Program Overview
The NASA Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program (SHARP) offers a select group of students the opportunity to participate in an intensive science and engineering apprenticeship program. SHARP is a commuter program for local high school students. A residential program is also available to high school students throughout the country. The students selected must demonstrate an aptitude for and an interest in science, mathematics, and engineering careers.
The 8-week program offers the students an opportunity to learn and earn. After participating in an orientation process, they are assigned to work with a Dryden mentor in a specific technical area. During this apprenticeship, the students carry out assignments, prepare written reports, and make oral presentations. The program begins in mid-June.
Students, under the supervision of the SHARP Program staff, participate in a variety of enrichment activities such as college visitation, career exploration and counseling, and tours to observe where and how technology is impacting our community.
Program Objectives
SHARP aims to stimulate broad career interests in science and engineering among a culturally diverse group of students, and involve them in mentoring relationships with active researchers.
Eligibility Requirements
Students (including upcoming seniors) are encouraged to apply, understanding that major consideration will be given to those demonstrating academic potential, interest in science and math, and extracurricular activities. As a general rule, the program is not open to graduating seniors, but one or two SHARP participants from the preceding year may be invited to come back for a second year.
To be eligible to apply, students must meet these basic requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen who will be at least 16 years old by the time the program starts in June.
- Demonstrate a strong interest in and aptitude for a career in mathematics, engineering, or the sciences.
- Be a permanent resident (in accordance with state residency requirements) and attend a school within the 50-mile radius of a participating NASA Field Installation. A residential component of the program for students not attending a school within the 50-mile radius is also available. - Be available every day on a full-time basis for the duration of the 8-week internship.
